A New Hospital Building Gives NH Hospital an Opportunity to Tell the Story of Decades of Mental Health Care
New Hampshire Hospital has been a leader in mental health care since its founding in the 1790’s. As the institution moved into a beautiful new facility, Image 4 was commissioned to design a Brand Environment and small museum.
To communicate New Hampshire Hospital’s continuing commitment to the care of those suffering from mental health issues, Image 4 was asked to create a visual brand scheme as a frame for graphic and digital messaging. We developed a color palette that complemented the interior décor. Visual and communication hierarchy was defined and our designers worked with NH Hospital Project Administrator Jennica Barrera to script the various areas.
To help patients and visitors access schedules and resources, Image 4 developed a communications center where both pamphlet literature and digital content are easily available. Design elements were carried through the lobby and public areas.
Core to the project was the creation of a history room – a small museum presenting artifacts from almost 200 years of the hospital. This high-visibility area had also to be completely secure for the safety of patients. Image 4 sorted through literal buildings of materials, researched the origins and history of the institution, and developed a presentation theme for the small and visually rich space.
Our design team combined artifacts – including a 4,000-pound steel safe, historical healthcare instruments and patients’ art creations – into a multi-layer exhibit. We constructed a load-bearing wall to support shelving, suspended an exam lamp, placed a doctor’s desk on which we arranged artifacts and images. The exterior of the area was finished with a large-scale mural and multiple iPads on which we display the story of the hospital, classes of nursing students and information about the artifacts.
The award-winning project has become a place of pride, learning and reflection in New Hampshire Hospital. It truly reflects the institution’s Authentic Brand™.
